Abstract

Water soluble epoxy resin was used as gel former in the zirconia gelcasting process. The rheologieal properties and gelation behavior of the zirconia slurry were investigated. The rheological data shows that the slurry viscosity increases in the presence of epoxy resin. For the slurry with a solid phase content of 53.7% (in volume), the acceptable viscosity is about 0.60 Pa-s at 100 s-1. In order to obtain high elastic modulus polymer gel, the optional hardener (dipropylentriamin) content is 3.4% (in mass). Since the polymerization and gelation process depends greatly on the temperature, the gelation process can be controlled by controlling the temperature. At 30 ℃, the polymerization of epoxy resin in the slurry begins at 8 min. The slurry loses fluidity after 20 min, and slurry solidification is completed within 1h at 30--40 ℃. The elastic modulus (G')of the wet green bodies is 1.96 MPa. Compared with gelation at 30 ℃, the gelation process is hastened by higher temperature and results in higher G' of wet green bodies.
