Expression Pattern and Clinical Significance of E-cadherin in Squamous Cell Carcinoma of Cervix

Abstract
Objective To study the expression pattern and clinicalsignificance of E-cadherin (ECD) in cervical squamous cell carcinoma.Methods We used SP immunohistochemical method to study ECD expression in 42 cervical squamous cell carcinomas.The survival was analyzed by Kaplan-Meier survival curve,Log-rank test and Cox regression model.Results (1) ECD membranous and cytoplasmic expressions were found simultaneously in cervical squamous cell carcinoma.High membranous expression was more frequent in Ⅰ,Ⅱ grade tumors (20/31) than in Ⅲ grade(2/11) (P<0.05).High cytoplasmic expression occurred in 11/13 cases with lymph node metastasis and 8/20 cases without lymph node metastasis (P<0.05).(2) A strong inverse correlation was found between membranous and cytoplasmic expressions.(3) Low membranous expression with/or high cytoplasmic expression was associated with tumor dedifferentiation,lymph node metastasis and poor survival.Conclusion Low membranous expression with/or high cytoplasmic expression of ECD was an important factor of poor prognosis in cervical squamous cell carcinoma.关键词
