Abstract
Objective To estimate the prevalence of blindness, surgical coverage rate and bilateral cataract blindness burden among adults aged 40 or above in Linzhou county of Tibet, China. Methods Using cluster sampling, 3,071 individuals aged 40 years or older were selected randomly from 44 villages in Linzhou county, Tibet in April, 2000 for visual acuity test and eye examination. Results A total of 3,346 subjects ≥40 years old were registered .Of them 91.8% (3,071/3,346) were examined. In this population, 3.3% (101/3,071) were blind which was defined as presenting visual acuity less than 6/60 in both eyes. Cataract was the principal cause of blindness in at least one eye in 65.3% (66/101) of blind people. The cataract surgical coverage was estimated to be 63.0% (85/135), and the bilateral cataract-blindness burden was 4.4% (135/3,071) Conclusion The prevalence of blindness in the plateau is high, and bilateral cataract-blindness burden is heavy on old individuals. Cataract blindness is a serious public health problem in elderly people.关键词
