Abstract

Rare earth (Tm, Dy, Tb, Eu) ion mono- and co-doped borosilicate glasses were prepared in ambient atmosphere by melt quenching method. The characteristics of photoluminescence and excitation spectra of the obtained glasses were investigated. The results show that red and blue emission bands corresponding to Eu3+ and Eu2+ co-exist in the Eu ion mono-doped borosilicate glasses,indicating the conversion of Eu3+ to Eu2+ occurs in the glasses. The conversion efficiency is depending on the content of B2O3 and the type of network modifier. In addition, a red shift of the Eu2+ emission peak was observed with increasing ionic radius of alkaline earth cations. Blue, yellow/green and red emission bands were observed in the emission spectra of Eu/Dy and Tm/Tb/Eu co-doped borosilicate glasses. The combination of these emission bands allows the realization of white light when the glass is excited by ultraviolet light. Moreover, the relative emission intensity ratios of these emission peaks could be adjusted by changing the composition of glasses. This indicates that the obtained rare earth ions co-doped borosilicate glasses are potential fluorescent materials for developing white-light emitting diode devices.
