Effects of Corn Oil on the Rumen Fermentation in Cattle

Abstract
Three adult hybrid cattle fitted with rumen cannulas in a 3×3 Latin square design, were fed with diets based on rice straw and mixed concentrates (2:1) and added with 0%,4%or8%corn oil. The rumen fluid samples were collected in 2,4,6 and 8 h after morning feeding. Rumen pH was measured, and NH3-N and VFA were determined. The results show that addition of 4% or 8% corn oil did not influence the rumen pH and NH3-N concentration (P>0.05). Addition of 4% corn oil did not influence VFA (P>0.05), but 8% corn oil significantly decreased the total VFA and acetic acid concentration, respectively (P<0.05). The addition of less than 8% corn oil did not influence the propionic concentration and butyric acid concentration (P>0.05). Addition of 4% and 8% corn oil significantly decreased the ratio of acetic to propionic acid from 3.75 to 3.26 and 3.14, respectively (P<0.05).关键词
