Effects of epidural anesthesia on oxygen delivery and consumption balance in geriatric patients with major abdominal surgery

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the effects of epidural anesthesia on oxygen delivery and consumption balance in geriatric patients undergoing major abdominal surgery. Methods: To select fifteen patients with epidural anesthesia, more than 65 years, ASA class Ⅰor Ⅱ, undergoing major abdominal surgery and monitor the dynamic changes of oxygen delivery (DO2),oxygen consumption (VO2), oxygen extraction rate (ERO2), mixed venous oxygen saturation (SvO2), and arteral blood lactate (ABL). Results: from anesthesia induction to the end of operation, there were not any different changes in DO2, VO2, SvO2,ABL compared with those before anesthesia (P＞0.05). But ERO2 increased significantly from 60 minutes after the start of operation to 30 minutes after operation (P＜0.05, or P＜0.01). Conclusions: Epidural anesthesia has no adverse effects on oxygen delivery and consumption balance in geriatric patients undergoing major abdominal surgery.关键词
