Abstract
BACKGROUND: Which one can reflect the correlation of social support with quality of life better in Chinese elderly people, the Chinese version of Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey Scale(SF-36) or the Quality of Life questionnaire for elderly Chinese(QOL)?OBJECTIVE: To analyze and study the effect of the social support on the quality of life among elderly people. DESIGN: Cross-sectional population-besed study.SETTING, PARTICIPANTS and INTERVENTION: All 167 elderly Chinese living in Suzhou were evaluated by using the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey scale(SF-36) and Quality of Life questionnaire for elderly Chinese(QOL) for quality of life, and the Social Support Review questionnaire(SSRS) questionnaire for social support.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Outcome of SSRS, MOS SF-36 and Quality of Life (QOL) questionnaire.RESULTS: MOS SF-36 showed that the subjective support of social support was not correlated with the quality of life expect vitality and mental health. The subjective support was positively correlated with total scores of social support, rapprochement in the family, affiliation with the community and satisfaction of living; objective support was positively related to rapprochement in the family, condition of habitation and satisfaction of living;and there was also a significantly positive relation between mental hygiene and the utilization of support.CONCLUSION: Social support is a major factor closely related with quality of life for elderly Chinese. The QOL questionnaire for elderly Chinese may be more sensitive and more preferable in social support.关键词
