HOLOCENE PALEOFLOODS IN THE NORTH CHINA PLAIN

Abstract
Grain-size analysis and sedimentary structure observation show that different types of swamp deposit sections are characterized by pluvial-paludal deposit cycles, which includes a pluvial period and a paludal period. Based on 14C dating of the top of paludal layers, it is confirmed that there are at least 10 cycles in the North China Plain during Holocene with the ending time as:(13000±140)aB.P., (12910±180)aB.P., (10530±120)aB.P., (9500±40)aB.P., (8760±250)aB.P., (8030±150)aB.P., (5600±85)aB.P., (5020±200)aB.P., (4600±190)aB.P., and (3470±125)aB.P. And frequent floods in the plain may be the cause why most of the late neolithic sites and ancient cultural ruins of Xia, Shang and Zhou dynasties of North China sit on pluvial terraces in front of Taihang Mountains.关键词
