Abstract

Banerjee method (1984), in which concentration of petroleumhydrocarbons in orga nism tissue due to bioconcentration was measured by variation between concentration of pollutant in water in control without organism and sample with organism, was applied. Then, a kinetic model of two-compartment bioconcentration was developed. The model offers an available and simple method for measuring kinetic paramet ers for bioconcentration of petroleum hydrocarbon by marine commercial mussels. With the method, uptake and elimination rate constants, k1 and k2, and bioconcentration factor, BCF were measured for bioconcentration of petroleum hydrocarbon of WSF associated with crude oil and fuels (including Dagang crude oil, No 90 gasoline and No 0 diesel) by Mytilus edulis. It was shown that k1 ranged from 15.4 to 119.0/d, k2 from 0.010 to 0.043/d, and BCF from 723 to 3876. BCF decreased as following: diesel>gasol ine>crude oil. It suggests that the diesel is the most toxic to Mytilus edulis, probably attributable to higher contents of aromatic hydrocarbons with two or three benzene rings.
