Abstract
[Objective] To explore possible correlation between the white matter hyperintensities on MRI and clinical features of Parkinson's disease (PD). [Methods] 90 patients with PD and 60 age-matched healthy controls were imaged by MRI, and the frequencies of both periventricular and centrum semiovale hyperintensities were analyzed and compared. Moreover, in the PD group, we studied the possible correlation of the white matter hyperintensities with clinical features such as severity and disease duration. [Results] The frequency of the periventricular hyperintensities was significantly higher in patients with PD than people in healthy control (P＜0.05). However, there were no significant differences in the frequency of centrum semiovale hyperintensities found between patients with PD and healthy control (P ＞0.05). Moreover, within the PD group, the patients with periventricular hyperintensities had significantly shorter disease duration and greater disease severity than those without ( P ＜0.05); but no significant differences were found between patients with or without centrum semiovale hyperintensities either in disease duration or in disease severity (P ＞0.05). [Conclusion] These data suggest that periventricular hyperintensities may be a marker for a clinical subtype of PD characterized by a faster neurodegenerative process.关键词
