An Overview on Tropical Cyclone Research Progress
in China during the Past Ten Years

Abstract
At the beginning of the 1990s, several large-scape tropical cyclone (TC) field experiments were launched internationally and domestically. Much valuable intensive observational data have been
obtained. With these data, a series of studies on tropical cyclone especially on abnormal typhoons were carried out in China. Under the national key project related to tropical cyclone such as “ Typhoon scien tific operational experiment and studies on its synoptic and dynamic theories” and international
cooperative project on typhoon named “ SPECTRUM”, TC sudden change phenomena and forecast techniques were investigated with emphasis in China. During the past 10 years, much improvements
have been achieved in sudden changes of tropical cyclone motion, its structure and intensity, sudden in tensification of typhoon caused heavy rain, TC track forecast methods etc. This paper will summarize briefly these developments.
