鞭虫具有世界性之分布,多流行于热带、亚热带及卫生状况较差之地区.虫体形体似鞭状,故称鞭虫.虫体呈棕黄色后端较粗,长3～5 cm,雌虫较长.虫体后端含有肠道及生殖器官.大便中桶状虫卵为诊断之特征.成虫及虫卵之形体与人体者类似,惟家畜及野生动物则具有不同之特征.雌虫(35～55 cm)较雄虫(30～45 cm)长.一雌虫每天可产3000～70000虫卵.卵两端各有一凸出塞子,形体柠檬.大小为50-54×22-23 μm.
