Parametric Analysis of Multiple Tuned Mass Dampers for Attenuating Undesirable Along-wind Responses of Tall Buildings

Abstract
The main objective of this paper is to perform the parametric studies of the multiple tuned mass dampers (MTMD) for attenuating undesirable along-wind displacement and acceleration responses of structures with resorting to the pseudo-excitation approach in the frequency domain. The MTMD is kept to have the identical stiffness and damping but unequal mass, thus more easily manufactured. Minimization of the minimum values of the maximum displacement and acceleration dynamic magnification factors of the structure is used to seek for the optimum parameters of the MTMD. Minimization of the minimum values of the maximum displacement and acceleration dynamic magnification factors, respectively, nondimensionalized by the maximum displacement and acceleration dynamic magnification factors of the structure without the MTMD, is adopted as the index measuring the effectiveness of the MTMD. Evaluation is conducted on the stroke displacement of the MTMD through assessing the maximum displacement dynamic magnification factor of every TMD in the MTMD. The results indicate that both the deviation of the controlled natural frequency and the variation in wind loading have no influence upon the optimum parameters and effectiveness of the MTMD. However, it is worth noting that the stroke displacement of the MTMD is sensitive to both of them, in particular, to the former. The stroke displacement of the MTMD is a very important specification that decides costs. Consequently, a large deviation higher than the controlled natural frequency is not permitted. Additionally, the total number within the range from n=7 to n=15 is beneficial when the MTMD is used to control the along-wind responses of tall buildings.关键词
