Screening of Antibiotic Resistant Inhibitors from Traditional Chinese Medicines against Two Different Strains of Staphylococcus aureus

Abstract

The present work was carried out to screen the effect of the traditional Chinese medicine in combination with the antibiotics to identify systems, which might be used to improve the efficiency of the antibiotics used. The inhibitory effects of ethanolic extracts of 14 traditional Chinese medicines and their combinations with four antibiotics on the resistance of Staphylococcus aureus were checked. Methicillin resistant S. aureus (MRSA), which was isolated from patient,and a standard strain of S. aureus were used. M. fortunei , Portulaca oleracea, M. officinalis , Platycodon grandifiorum, Leonurus heteropyllus , Prunella vulgaris were effective on improving the inhibitory effects of both the resistant and sensitive S. aureus when combined with four antibiotics. E. helioscopia , Verbena officinalis , A . carmichaeli , Plantago asiatica, Eucommia ulmoides , Datura metel showed no synergistic activity. Combinations of penicillin and ceftriaxone with Paeania lactifiora on both strains showed significant improvement in the antimicrobial activity. A. yunnanensis combined with ciprofloxacin exhibited powerful antimicrobial activity. It is a valuable practice to screen traditional Chinese medicines combined with antibiotics against S. aureus.
