Abstract

This paper presents the results of an experimental study on fatigue behaviour of precracked reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened with carbon sheet under 3 point bending test. The RC beams (200 mm×150 mm×700 mm), which were initially crack-damaged by pre-loading until the summation of the opening of two cracks equal to 0.7 mm, were subsequently strengthened by bonding carbon sheet on the tensile and the lateral surfaces. The bridging effect of carbon sheet reduces the cracks width and produces the redistribution of stresses between the steel rebars and the carbon sheets under static and fatigue loads. The results indicate that RC beams strengthened by carbon sheet are significantly improved in the respects of stiffness, ultimate structural capacity and ultimate fatigue life.
