Abstract
This paper presents an elastic nonlinear buckling analysis of a kind of steel structure hybridized by I section arch and tensile cables. The effects of cables on the instability behavior in the plane of the hybrid structure is investigated theoretically by using the large deflection (displacement) finite element approach in conjunction with the arc length method and Newton Raphson iteration. A full load displacement equilibrium path is obtained, including prebuckling and post buckling equilibrium path. It is found that the cables affect significantly the structural behavior, including its limit load carrying capacity and its load displacement paths. Furthermore, the effects of boundary condition and rise span ratio on the limit load carrying capacity are also involved in the theoretical investigation. Some conclusions to the design of the cable arch structures are drawn from the numerical results obtained in the study.
