Abstract

With the fast development of digital and portable apparatus, the requirement for battery becomes higher than ever, especially for the battery with high power and high-energy. Obviously the common alkaline battery cannot completely satisfy such request. In this paper, Li/FeS2 AA primary batteries for high power and high-energy were successfully developed originally in China within treated FeS2 samples as positive material. Natural FeS2 samples were grinded firstly, then heated in nitrogen and finally washed in acid, thus treated FeS2 samples were prepared. Chemical composition, physical property and structural characterization of natural and treated FeS2 samples were discussed and correlated with their discharge capacities in lithium cells. According to the results of chemical and physical analysis, the purity and grain sizes of FeS2 samples were important factors which affected the electrochemical performance of Li/FeS2 primary batteries. Discharge performances of Li/FeS2 AA primary battery at different current were examined in comparison with LR6 AA battery from Nanfu Company. In addition, the whole process of preparation meets the requests of environmental protection. Anyway, Li/FeS2 primary battery is a green and high-energy power source, and will be used more widely in the future.
