Abstract

With the development of modern well-logging techniques, direct shear wave logging has become an increasingly important tool in exploration and production geophysics. Shear wave logging tools use dipole radiation in the borehole to generate flexural waves in formation. The flexural wave is highly dispersive. In soft sediments, the high attenuation is associated with the shear wave. Thee factors make it difficult to determine the slowness of shear wave correctly. In this paper the simulated annealing method is introduced to determine the shear wave travel time. This method is more eonsistent than conventional picks based on slowness-travel time coherence, especially in situations where the signal-to-noise ratio is low or the wavelet is emergent. This method also provides a means for quantifying the relative confidence in each pick ver the entire depth of the well. The method has been applied to the data recorded by the 5700 logging system in Liaohe Oil Company and compared favorably with more conventional estimates of shear wave slowness. It was shown to be robust even in areas of weak arrivals.
