Abstract
· AIM: To review the causes and visual outcome of eye injuries at Abakaliki, Nigeria.· METHODS: The hospital records of all patients who presented to the Accident and Emergency Unit or Eye Clinic of Federal Medical Centre, Abakaliki, with eye in juries over 18mo period (2000-06/2001-11) were reviewed.· RESULTS: A total of 108 patients (60 males and 48 females) had eye injuries during the study period. The activities at the time of injury included fighting/assault 30 (27.7%), play/sports 22 (20.4%), farming 18(16.7%) and domestic activities 16 (14.8%). The objects inflicting the injuries were mainly sticks, stone, fist and objects associated with road traffic accidents. Only 9 patients (8.3%) presented to the hospital within 24h of injury. Visual outcome was best in those with blunt trauma and worst in those with penetrating injuries. The major complications encountered were cataract, corneal scar and glaucoma.· CONCLUSION: Eye injuries at Abakaliki are largely preventable. There is a need for public enlightenment on ways to reduce the incidence of eye injuries.关键词
