Medium optimization for the growth of Clostridium autoethanogenum

Abstract
Statistical strategy was applied to optimize the medium for the growth of Clostridium autoethanogenum, which can convert H2, CO and CO2 into ethanol and acids. The main medium components were firstly divided into eleven groups according to their different effects. According to Plackett-Burman design, Yeast extract was screened to be the only significant factor affecting the growth of C. autoethanogenum and the relative advisable concentrations of other medium compositions were suggested. The optimal concentration of 1.50 g/L for yeast extract was established. Under those conditions, 399.46 mg/L of Clostridium autoethanogenum per liter were finally obtained. This optimized medium for the growth of Clostridium autoethanogenum could be applied in two-step CSTRS for ethanol production from syngas.关键词
