Abstract

The mathematical signal tools used in traveling wave differential protection method is not implemented effectively. In order to solve this problem, a new traveling wave differential protection method using the difference between instantaneous frequencies of initial traveling wave crest on both sides is presented. Hibert-Huang Transform (HHT) is used to get instantaneous frequency of initial current traveling wave. Influence of wave trapper to the initial traveling wave crest is also analyzed. When line fault occurs in external area or internal area,the numbers of traps which traveling waves passed in both sides are different, and instantaneous frequencies of initial traveling wave crest on both side are different too. The traveling wave differential protection method is formed based on this difference which can be used to distinguish between internal fault and external fault. Simulation results show that it is an easy and effective protection method.
