Abstract
Objective To investigate the effect of combined acupuncture and medicine on the pain index and the dysfunction index in patients with lumbar intervertebral disc herniation.Methods Sixty-three patients meeting the inclusion criteria were divided, by a simple random allocation, into acupuncture-medicine and Chinese herbal medicine groups.They were treated by acupuncture plus oral administration of Chinese herbal medicine and oral administration of Chinese herbal medicine alone,respectively.Treatment was given once daily, 15 days as a course.The clinical therapeutic effects were evaluated using TCM Criteria for Diagnosis of Symptoms and Evaluation of Therapeutic Effects, the Visual Analogous Scale (VAS) and the Chinese version of the Oswestry Disability Index (CODI).Results Of the 32 patients of the acupuncture-medicine group, cure occurred in 15,improvement in 14 and ineffectiveness in 3.Of the 31 patients of the Chinese herbal medicine group, cure occurred in 8,improvement in 15 and ineffectiveness in 8.The VAS score and the CODI score improved in both groups.They improved more in the acupuncture-medicine group than in the Chinese herbal medicine group.Conclusion The combined use of acupuncture and medicine can relieve the pain well and improve the functions in the treatment of lumbar intervertebral disc herniation.关键词
