Abstract
Objective To explore the association between the prostate volume ( PV ) and the serum levels of androgen and estrogen. Methods Totally 71 benign prostatic hyperplasia patients were randomly enrolled, and their PV was measured by ultrasound, and the serum androgen and serum estrogen levels were measured by biochemical tests. Results PV ranged 20 ～ 136 ml ( mean : 52. 9ml ). The serum androgen levels were 2. 6 ～ 29. 5 nmol/L ( mean : 16. 9 ± 8. 2nmol/L ). The serum estrogen levels were 40 ～ 1 , 370 pmol/L ( mean 325 ± 170 ) pmol/L. The serum estrogen/androgen ratio were 1: 3. 1 ～ 1: 339 ( averaged 1: 85 ± 1: 32 ) . PV showed a positive correlation with serum estrogen ( P ＜ 0. 05 ), and it was negatively correlated with serum androgen when PV was less than 70 ml ( P ＜ 0. 05 ). In addition, PV had negative correlation with serum estrogen/ androgen ratio ( P ＜0. 05 ) . Conclusion Serum estrogen, serum androgen and serum estrogen/ androgen ratio may affect the level of prostatic hyperplasia and PV. High - level serum androgen may inhibit prostatic hyperplasia, while estrogen play a key role in prostatic hyperplasia. However, the roles of sex hormones in prostatic hyperplasia require further clinical observations.关键词
