摘要

Abstract

Aim To investigate the influence of the uptake rate of inhaled gas on the second gas effect and to further elicit the conditions adequate for the existence of the second gas effect. Methods Under the guidance of the macroscopic theories in thermodynamics and quantitative analysis in mathematics, the second gas effect was discussed from two aspects:the conditions for the existence of the second gas effect and those for the non-existence of the second gas effect. Results When the uptake rate of nitrous oxide was larger than that of oxygen,the second gas effect existed;when the uptake rates of nitrous oxide, oxygen and halothane were equal, the second gas effect did not exist;when the uptake rate of halothane was equal to the average uptake rate of nitrous oxide and oxygen, the second gas effect did not exist. Conclusions The existence of the second gas effect is not absolute but conditional. The present research can be discussed from the perspective of gas uptake rate.
