Damage analysis and assessment of RC slabs under blast load

Abstract
Pressure-impulse (P-I) diagrams are commonly used in the preliminary design or assessment of structures to establish safe response limits for given blast load. However, the current practice in generating P-I diagrams is primarily based on the SDOF system theory and the maximum deformation related damage criterion. In actual situations, structural components might deform in high order modes and be damaged locally under blast load. Therefore, the simplified SDOF system can't accurately represent the structural component. The combined shear and flexural damage mode is also very likely to occur, in which case the maximum deflection related damage criterion will also fail to assess the damage level of structural components under blast load. In this paper, the finite element model of a typical two-way RC slab was established in software LS-DYNA. Based on the model, both the damage process and possible damage modes were analyzed and discussed. A new damage criterion for RC slab under blast load was defined, which was residual bending capacity related. With a series of numerical simulations, P-I diagrams of the slab were generated based on the defined damage criterion. Analytical formula to generate the P-I diagram for the two-way RC slab was also derived through the curve fitting method. P-I diagrams generated from the proposed method can be used to evaluate the damage degree of the RC slab under any blast load.关键词
