Abstract

In higher plants and animals, BI-1 (Bax inhibitor-1) is the inhibitor of apoptosis.Overexpression of BI-1 in plant can improve the tolerance to cell death induced by biological and abiotic stress.Using known BI-1 gene sequences of upland cotton, two full-length cDNAs of GhBI gene, GhBI-la and GhBI-lb, were amplified by RACE technology.The homology of these two genes in nucleotides was 86% and was 87% in encoded protein.GhBI-la has six transmembrane regions while GhBI-lb has seven transmembrane regions.GhBl-la and GhBl-lb were expressed both in roots and leaves.GhBl-lb was induced by Verticillium dahliae, but GhBI-la had no significant difference after inoculation.Homologous analysis suggested that GhBI-1a located in subgenome D and GhBI-1b located in subgenome A of the allotetroploid cotton genome.Cloning of these two genes would be benefited to further study the biotic and abiotic stress adaptation mechanisms of upland cotton and thus to improve the tolerance in cotton breeding.
