Abstract

This paper analyses REE content in sediments from Zhoulao borehole in sedimentation center of Jianghan Plain. The results indicate that the REE content, gross amount of REE, the ratio about ∑Ce/∑Y, Ce anomaly and Eu anomaly above 108 m sediments in Zhoulao borehole is no changing and close to that in modern Yangtze sediments. These indexes also demonstrate that the provenance of Jianghan Plain sediments is the same as the modern Yangtze sediments, the rocks in upper Yangtze drainage. In the discrimination diagram of REE characteristic parameters, the REE characteristic in Jianghan Plain sediments is similar to that in Jinshajiang and Jialingjiang drainage sediments. Therefore, the main provenance of Jianghan Plain sediments above 108 m is Jinshajiang and Jialingjiang drainage. Moreover, the modern Yangtze is formed before 1Ma because geochemical characteristics of REE of Yangtze sediments basically have no change since 1 Ma ago.
