Abstract

The backorder of any components can not only delay the delivery of the final product but also stop other components being assembled in a production line. Backorder problems can slow the inventory turnover rates and disrupt production plans of all related suppliers. As a result, production costs can be substantially increased. These increased production costs on suppliers are considered “extra holding costs” Supply-hub is an innovative strategy that has been increasingly employed by assembly finns to meet the logistics requirements, achieve cost reduction and improve responsiveness. Supply-hubs act not only as warehouses but also as information system platforms for supply chain logistics. Utilizing the supply-hub strategy enables suppliers to share information, such as inventory and replenishment information. As a result of the information sharing mechanism, suppliers can collaborate with each other to make more accurate replenishment decisions. Collaborative operations among suppliers of different components can help minimize the system costs and accommodate the demand of assembly plants.Assumptions and a theoretical model are introduced. We assume that a supply chain consists of supply-hubs and manufacturers.The supply-hub strategy adopts the "milk-mn" method to pick up components from these two kinds of suppliers. Suppliers' costs are interrelated because of the extra holding costs of matching components. A coordinated replenishment policy, designed to encourage information sharing among suppliers, needs to address the following activities: ( 1 ) Suppliers with longer lead times first decide on their replenishment quantities, and then uploads the replenishment information to the supply-hub; (2) Suppliers with shorter lead times choose their replenishment quantities based on the inventory information of other suppliers on the supply-hub platform; and (3) The supply- hub dispatches vehicles to collect components from those supplies in a predetermined quantity with “milk-runs.”A unique Nash equilibrium exists statically when information sharing among suppliers does not occur in the traditional replenishment model. The traditional model is reformulated after taking into consideration of information sharing and coordination among suppliers. An analysis is conducted based on the revised model and shows that suppliers with longer lead time always choose a fixed target replenishment level. Suppliers with shorter lead time will choose the target level depends on real time inventory position of another supplier. Our findings suggest that this coordinated replenishment policy is an effective method to manage inventory backorder problems. The holding and extra holding costs of components can be substantially reduced via the coordinated replenishment policy.
