Abstract

PBO (Poly-p-phenylene benzobisthiazole) is a kind of aromatic heterocyclic rigid-rod polymer.Compared with other high property fibers, PBO fiber has a lot of super performances, such as tensile strength, high modulus, chemical resistance and high temperature abrasion resistance. However, the inteffacial adhesion between fiber and matrix is bad. This article studies on the surface modification of PBO fibers by using the plasma treatment combine with coating process. Using scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and infrared spectroscopy( IR), the surface physical and chemical characterization of PBO fiber were conducted. The relationship between the processing method and the interlaminar shear strength was investigated through the composite interlaminar shear strength test.The results showed that the plasma treatment could increase surface roughness and polarity of the PBO fiber surface.When the PBO fiber after the plasma treatment combines with coating process, the efficiency is most obvious. The interlaminar shear strength up to 39% of strength increase than the fiber without surface treatment.
