Abstract

Accelerated aging of polypropylene (PP) hollow fiber membranes applied in seawater desalination is reported. The structure evolution of PP membranes before and after the seawater desalination is characterized by Fourier infrared spectroscopy, thermo-analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The reason leading to the decreased strength of the PP membrane after the application in seawater desalination is investigated by control experiments. The results indicate that it is the oxidation of hypochlorite in seawater that causes the strength of PP membrane to decrease. To avoid the accelerated aging of the PP membranes used in seawater desalination, some measures were put forward based on the discussion in this article.
