Effect of conductive agent morphology on rate discharge capability of Li-ion batteries

Abstract
The effect of conductive agent morphology in positive electrode on the rate discharge performance of Li-ion batteries was studied. The cell using carbon black as conductive agent in positive electrode had good rate discharge performance. At the discharge rate of 15 C, the cells still held 84.3% of the discharge capacity shown at the discharge rate of 1 C. The discharge capacity of cells with graphite as conductive agent in positive electrode dropped steeply as the discharge current increases. The discharge capacity at 15C rates only held 21.8% of that at 1 C rate. The reason was that the flake-shape of graphite particle induced the tortuosity to increase greatly. The effect of carbon black on tortuosity was very slight due to its spheric shape.关键词
