Abstract

This paper discusses connotation of groundwater renewal capacity and reproducibility as well as function of groundwater movement in the global water cycle, and questioned the accuracy of “groundwater cycle”. It is proposed that renewable capacity and reproducibility of groundwater is a kind of natural attribute and intrinsic characteristics of aquifer system. Groundwater is replenished and discharged through outer boundaries, and interacts with surface water, soil and atmosphere system by water transfer. Groundwater quantity in aquifer system does not influence renewable capacity. During groundwater renewal, groundwater is impacted by both natural environment and human activities. The final status of groundwater quality reflects the reproducibility of aquifer system, which is influenced mostly by the hydro-geochemical conditions, especially after serious changes in groundwater level. Factors affecting groundwater reproducibility are more complex than those affecting renewable capacity.
