Abstract
Objective To investigate the causes for fever of unknown origin ( FUO ). Methods Clinical data of patients diagnosed as FUO from January 2009 to January 2010 at our facility and completed the subsequent follow - up of 6 ～ 18 months were retrospectively analyzed. Results Out of the 229 FUO cases. 203 were definitely diagnosed ( 88.6％, 203/229). The most common causes of FUO were infectious diseases ( 48.8％, 99/203 ). 68 cases (33.5％, 68/203 ) suffered from collagen vascular diseases ( CVD ), 13 cases ( 6.4％ , 13/203 ) were diagnosed with tumorous diseases, and the left 23 ( 11.3％ , 23/203 ) were cases of other kinds of diseases. However, definite diagnosis remained unmade in 26 cases ( 11.4％,26/229 ) cases by the time we completed a 6 - month follow - up. Conclusion Infectious diseases, especially virus infection and tuberculosis , are still the most common causes of FUO; CVD is another major cause of FUO, with adult onset Still's disease most commonly seen; the most common causal diseases among tumorous diseases is lymphoma, with a high mortality rate. Careful analysis of clinical data and physical examination results in comhination with essential lab examinations, are the better way to determin the causes of FUO.关键词
