Abstract

Using Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus as model strains, the antibacterial effect and the mechanism of silver nitrate were investigated. Experimental results indicated that the silver nitrate of 2. 891 mg/mL could inhibit completely the growth of 106cfu/mL cells in liquid LB medium, and that silver nitrate prolonged the lag phase of E. coli and S. aureus, the higher the concentration, the longer the lag phase. In addition, silver nitrate had a marked effect on the dehydrogenase activity of E. coli and S.aureus, the dehydrogenase activity decreased as the concentration increased. The surface hydrophobicity of bacterial cells all had a decline to some extent followed the solution of silver nitrate worked on the bacteria, and the higher the concentration, the more its effect. The descending degree in E. coli was larger than that in S. aureus.
