摘要

Abstract

One of the important factors that can significantly affect the light excitation process of an atom is the width of the related absorption line.Traditionally, in the rate equation theory the contributions of both homogeneous and inhomogeneous line broadening mechanisms are equally taken into account of the line shape function.In this paper a new approach, in which the homogeneous and inhomogeneous line broadening mechanisms are treated differently, is presented and it is pointed out that this approach is the sole right one in the case when the duration of an exciting light pulse is shorter than the mean collision time of atoms.The new approach is applied to a two energy level system and the results are very different from that of the traditional treatment.
