The Effect of "JianPiWenShenJieDu" Decoction on Quality of Life in Elderly Patients with Non-small Cell Lung Cancer

Abstract
Objective: To explore the effect of the "JianPiWenShenJieDu" Decoction on quality of life in elderly patients with non-small cell lung cancer.On the other hand, the aim was to evaluate the effectiveness and the rules of treatment with non -small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in the elderly.Methods: Based on the experienced prescription ( "JianPiWenShenJieDu"Decoction) of Professor Liu Jiaxiang, 57 elderly NSCLC cases were randomized into two groups: TCM group (treated with strengthening the spleen and warming the kidney and detoxification decoction), and chemotherapy group (the regime of chemotherapy is NP or TP or Taxel ).All cases were treated by 2 courses.By evaluating the quality of life using tools of the QOL questionnaire WHOQOL-OLD, ECOG performance status (PS) score and the change of weight etc; and the change of the symptoms,the size of tumor etc.Results: (1) Quality of life: 57 elderly NSCLC patients were investigated by WHOQOL-OLD, which ineluded 6 modules.After TCM treatment, improvement of various degree was obtained on the 3 modules ( sensory abilities; autonomy; past, present and future activities), in comparing with 2 modules (sensory abilities; social participation) descended significantly in the chemotherapy group, the difference was significant ( P＜0.05 ).The effective stable rate of ECOG performance status (PS) score and the increased stable rate in the TCM group were higher than those in the chemotherapy group, P＜0.05.(2) The symptoms improvement in TCM group were all prior to those in chemotherapy group (P＜0.05).(3) There were no significantly difference on the effect and stable rate of control the tumor size between TCM group and chemotherapy group, P values are all higher than 0.05 ( P＞0.05 ).Conclusions: ( 1 ) "JianPiWenShenlieDu" Decoction can stabilize the tumor size, improve the quality of life of lung cancer patients in the elderly and alleviate the symptoms.So this medicine has a good clinic therapeutic effect.(2) The therapeutic principle of "JianPiWenShenJieDu", which is one of the TCM therapeutic methods in treating elderly advanced NSCLC, can be seen useful.关键词
