Abstract

In order to improve the flame retardant effect of the intumescent flame retarder consisting of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and poly(p-ethylene terephthalamide (PETA) on the flaming acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer (ABS), some commonly used adjuvants, such as the zeolite 4A (4A),aluminum phosphinate (AlPi), organic montmorillonite (OMMT) and 2,2'-bis(2-oxazoline) (BOZ),were used separately with the ABS/APP/PETA flame retardant system. The mechanism of the flame retardant enhancement caused by the synergistic flame retardant effect of the adjuvants added was investigated by the limiting oxygen index (LOI) and by the help of UL-94 (vertical flame) test, thermogravimetrie analysis (TGA). The results show that the flame retardation of ABS/APP/PETA system can be significantly improved by incorporating with the addition of adjuvant (Adj). Without adding adjuvant, the LOI value of the intumescent flame retardant system ABS/APP/PETA is 29, and after adding 2%(wt) adjuvant of 4A, AlPi, OMMT and BOZ separately, the LOI values of the ABS/APP/PETA/Adj (70/25/5/2) system increase to 32, 33, 32 and 30, respectively; Besides,all the ABS/APP/PETA/Adj systems with above Adj are identified as V-0 in the UL-94 test. The results of TGA demonstrate that the synergism of the adjuvant is effective in enhancing the thermal stability and the char residue ratio of the ABS/APP/PETA/Adj system; and the oxygen could modify the carbonaceous structure and influent the thermal degradation of the system. Finally, the synergistic flame retardant mechanism was given.
