Mohnarin 2009 report:surveillance of antimicrobial resistance in Enterobacteriaceae in China

Abstract

Objective To investigate the antimicrobial resistance of Enterobacteriaceae in China in 2009. Methods All the clinical isolates of Enterobacteriaceae were collected and the susceptibility tests of the isolates were performed by 114 hospitals around China from 1st Jan. 2009 to 31st Dec. 2009. The susceptibilities of isolates to antimicrobial agents were determined by using CLSI (2009) guideline and the susceptibility data were processed with Whonet 5.5 software. Results In 2009, a total of 74412 Enterobacteriaceae susceptibility data were obtained. Among all the isolates, E. coli (33844 strains) outnumbered the other bacteria, accounting for 45%, followed by K. pneumonia (22071strains, 30% ), Enterobacter cloacae (7310 strains, 10% ) and others. The most effective medications were carbapenems. The resistance rates of Enterobacteriaceae to carbapenems were around or below 3%, except that the resistance rates of E. cloacae to meropenem and C. freundii were over 5%. The prevalence of ESBLs -producing E. coli, Klebsiella spp. and P. mirabilis were 65.5%, 40% or over and 26. 7%, respectively. Carbapenems were of equally active against ESBLs - producing and non -producing E. coli, Klebsiella spp. and P. mirabilis and piperacillin/tazobactam, and cefoperazone/sulbactam were of similar activity against ESBLs - producing and non - producing E. coli. The resistance rates of ESBLs-producing strains to other antibiotics were obviously higher than those of ESBLs - non producing strains. Conclusion Enterobacteriaceae were of different degree resistance to various antimicrobial agents, and some of them were of multidrug resistance. Carbapenems remained very high activity against Enterobacteriaceae, but the carbapenem resistance strains has appeared and the issue should be attracted attention.
