Abstract

Based on the observed data and the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data from 1964 to 2006, the interannual variability of frost-day in northwestern Guangdong and related circulation background are analyzed. The frost-day in northwestern Guangdong are concentrated in December and January. The annual frost-day decreases remarkably after 1986, especially in the west and the south of northwestern Guangdong. The abnormal characteristics of general circulation for more frost-day cases (or in less frost-day cases) are similar in both December and January in northwestern Guangdong. In the years for more frost-day, the general circulation in December and January can be characterized as follows. The upper ridge and trough over Eurasian continent develop intensively, and the Mongolian high pressure is also intensified. The sea level pressure is abnormally higher in East Asia but lower in the northwestern Pacific. The cold surges are active in the South China, which lead to lower surface temperature and lower relative humidity in the low-middle layer of atmosphere, accompanied with stronger descending motion. Meanwhile, the ascending motion is stronger over Philippines. The abnormal circulation background for less frost-day years is basically inversed to that for more frost-day years.
