Development of a 3-D numerical groundwater flow model of the Pinggu Basin and groundwater resources management

Abstract
As the capital of China, the city of Beijing faces a serious threat of groundwater over-exploitation.In order to lighten the contradiction between water demand.and water supply, two emergence wellfields were constructed in the Pinggu basin located in the eastern Beijing.Continual over-exploitation of groundwater led to a sharp decline in water levels in the basin, especially near the wellfields.The main intent of this study is the development of a 3-D transient groundwater flow for analyzing the water-containing conditions and exploitation potential.Using the validated model, several pumping scenarios were simulated and the results were analyzed.Based on the comparison of all the simulation results under different scenarios, the influence of precipitation and the amount of groundwater exploitation on the heads were analyzed quantitatively.The potential exploitation for various parts of the basin were gained and then the adjustment measurement of the amount of exploitation were forecasted to make the heads recovery.The suggestions related to the exploitation distribution were also given.关键词
