An investigation of awareness of pregnant women for voluntary HIV counseling and testing in Wuhan urban areas

Abstract
Objective To investigate awareness of pregnant women for HIV voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) in perinatal clinic,current service situation and existing problems so as to provide a basis for further improving AIDS prevention and control work. Methods I 264 pregnant women whose perinatal health document was firstly established in perinatal clinic of Maternal and Child Health Hospital of Jiang'an District of Wuhan City in a period from January 2010 to December were investigated with questionnaires and propagated. Of them, 1249 pregnant women accepted the serological testing. Results The awareness rate of pregnant women for transmission pathway of HIV was 66.03％, and their awareness rate for fact that maternal and child health institutions could provide free HIV screening was 33.33％, HIV testing coverage rate was 98. 81％, no positive HIV was found, If the fee of HIV antibody screening was paid by themselves, only 38.05％ of the pregnant women intented to accept the HIV testing and 61.95％ of the pregnant women would refuse the HIV testing. Conclusion The awareness rate of pregnant women for fact that maternal and child health institutions could provide free HIV screening is low, especially if the fee of HIV antibody screening is paid by themselves, the proportion of pregnant women who refuse the HIV testing is higher. So, publicity force of AIDS knowledge should be strengthed further, because voluntary HIV counseling and testing is an effecftive method and measure to reduce vertical transmission of HIV.关键词
