Abstract

The present situation and research on hydrate-based carbon dioxide separation from the flue gases emitted from fossil fuel power plants or from the IGCC syngas are introduced in this paper,including selection of the promoter or the additive, CO2 separation and capture process, and cost accounting. TBAB and THF are found to be the effective promoter and additive to improve rate of hydrate formation, to reduce the operating pressure, and to enhance CO2 recovery. Based on the research of TBAB and THF, hydrate separation and capture processes combined with chemical absorption or membrane separation are proposed. The cost of capturing 1 ton CO2 of the proposed process is about USD 26, which is lower than simply chemical absorption by about 31%. With further research, the cost can be reduced and the hydrate based CO2 separation and capture process could be promising in future.
