Abstract

During the application of polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) bit in the drilling of rock stratum which are more and more complex, teeth dropping and chipping occur now and then, as a result the life of PDC bit is reduced. In this work, samples of diameter 94 mm inner sunken PDC bit with three wings were prepared and tested, the major influencing factors on the welding quality were studied. A new kind of welding technology for PDC bit was developed. The test results showed that the PDC bits manufactured on the basis of the new welding technology had a lot of advantages, such as high welding strength, strong wear resistance and good impact resistance. No teeth dropping nor chipping was observed after drilling 13 holes. A footage of 10 000 m was realized before the bit got failed. The drilling efficiency was 60 m/h, the working life was about 1.5 times longer than that of the same type of bit.
