Influences of acupuncture with effects of awakening consciousness and improving intelligence in group acupoints on brain resting state function*

Abstract

Objective To study the influences of acupuncture in acupoints and non-acupoints on brain resting state function network by applying functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and to provide scientific evidence for exploring further the neural mechanism of acupuncture. Methods Twenty health university students were selected and divided randomly into the acupoint group and non-acupoint group. The acupoint group was given acupuncture in Baihui (GV20), Fengchi (GB20, both sides) and Neiguan ( PC6, both sides), while the non-acupoint group was given acupuncture in the sites 1.5 cm to 2. 0 cm asides of the above mentioned acupoints. After 30 minutes, all students were given immediate fMRI scan for collecting fMRI data. The different brain regions of regional homogeneity (ReHo) were obtained through ReHo computing, which were then taken as seed points to compute the functional connectivity (FC) between them and other brain voxels. Results The difference of brain resting state between two groups demonstrated mainly in left fusiform gyrus, left inferior temporal gyrus and left insula with statistical significance. The analysis of FC at the seed point of left insula showed that the influences of acupoint-needling and non-acupoint-needling on brain FC mode were different, which was stronger in left insula and right middle frontal gyrus in the acupoint group. Conclusion The influences of acupuncture in GV20, GB20 and PC6 on brain resting state function network showed the specific of acupoints. The effects of acupuncture in GV20, GB20 and PC6 for improving intelligence, awakening consciousness and improving memory may be related to that acupuncture can strengthen the activities of left fusiform gyrus, inferior temporal gyrus and insula at resting functional state, such as promoting the functional connection of memory-related or learning-related cerebral regions through the significant increase of FC in left insula and right middle frontal gyrus.
