Abstract

In order to investigate the effects of composite action on the stiffness, strength and energy dissipating capacity of steel-concrete composite frame, and examine the elasto-plastic behavior of composite frame system under rare seismic load, two full-scale rectangular CFST composite frames with and without composite floor slab were tested under cyclic loading to a maximum inter storey drift angle of 1/21 rad.The experimental results indicate that the composite frames exhibit steady hysteretic behavior and excellent ductility.The stiffness, strength and the energy-dissipating capacity of the frame will increase significantly with the composite action between the steel beam and floor slab.The buckling behavior of the top flange and the global stability of the steel beam will be improved with the presence of RC floor slab, while the bottom flange of the composite beam will strain remarkably resulting in a certain decrease of the beam rotation capacity.The failure of the two specimen was triggered from the damage at the beam end, which demonstrates that the through-beam-flange type connection satisfies the strong column-weak beam and strong joint-weak member mechanisms as required by seismic design code.
