Abstract
Objective To explore the association of plasma potassium concentration with muscle tone, ECG, and levels of serum muscle enzymes in patients with hypokalemic periodic paralysis. Methods The muscle tone, ECG, levels of serum muscle enzymes, and plasma potassium concentration wore measured and then analyzed in 80 patients. Results Of 80 patients, 20 patients had mild hypokalemia, 34 had moderate hypokalemia, and 26 had severe hypokalemia. The relation between muscle tone and potassium was not stable ( P> 0.05 ). 68 patients ( 85% ) developed abnormal ECG changes; the occurrence of abnormal ECG increased with the decrease in potassium levels. 64 patients( 80% ) had an elevated levels of muscle enzymes; and the levels of muscle enzymes were negatively related with potassium concentration. Conclusions Understanding of the association of plasma potassium concentration with with muscle tone, ECG, and levels of serum muscle enzymes is very important in the diagnosis and treatment of hypokalemic periodic paralysis.关键词
