Depression Condition and Awareness Among Elderly Patients with Chronic Diseases in Community

Abstract
Objective To investigate the depression status and its influencing factors of the community elderly patients with chromic diseases, and to learn their awareness of depression in Beijing.Methods The cluster sampling method was taken to enroll 257 elderly patients with chronic diseases ( ≥ 60 years ) in Qinan and Fubei community health service stations in Yuetan district of Beijing and a questionnaire survey was conducted among them on April 14 to 27, 2008.Results The incidence of depression was 24.51 ％ ( 63/257 ), among them four patients were diagnosed with depression and given antidepressants for treatment." Self - evaluation of health" was a major influential factor in the elderly patients with chronic diseases.The highest rate of seeking treatment for depression among them was " insomnia" , accounting for 50.58％ ( 130/257 ).The rates of elderly patients' needs for " elderly mental health services" and " mental health consulting" were 65.37％ ( 168/257 ) and 56.81％ ( 146/257 ) respectively.Conclusion Depression was the common negative emotion in elderly patients with chronic diseases.They were lack of awareness on depression and had great demand for mental health services.Popularity of mental health knowledge in community should be strengthened, and the community mental health prevention work needs to be further improved.关键词
