Abstract

The batch-to-glass conversion process of alkali-free (E-glass) batches containing pyrophyllite without sand and kaolinite with sand was investigated. The physicochemical reactions occurred during the batch-to-glass conversion process from room temperature to 1 200 ℃ were analyzed using X-ray diffraction method. Energy consumption and energies associated with endothermic and exothermic reaction from room temperature to 1400 ℃ were determined by a simultaneous thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis system. The results show that the energy consumed for E-glass made from pyrophyllite based batch is lower than that from the kaolinite based batch by 50 J/g. The energy involved in batch fusion into molten glass, plus keeping melt in form of highly random structure is very high, about 55% to 56% of the total energy consumed for the entire conversion process.
