Assessment of Cognitive Impairment in Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Hypopnea Syndrome using Neuropsychological Scales

Abstract
Objective To investigate the change of cognitive function before and after treatment in patients with obstructive sleep apnea and hypopnea syndrome using neuropsychological scales.Methods A total of 22 OSAHS patients and 15 healthy controls were enrolled.Polysomnography ( PSG ), mini - mental state examination ( MMSE ), Wechslermemory scale ( WAIS - RC ), clock drawing, and digital symbol test were applied in both groups befor and one month after the initiation of treatment.Results Compared with the control group, OSAHS patients showed poorer sleep quality, lower mean oxygen saturation during the night ( MSpO2 ), and impaired cognitive function.MMSE scale was negatively related to arousal index ( r = -0.45, P ＜0.05 ) and positively related to MSpO2 ( r =0.52, P ＜0.05 ), while MQ was only positively correlated to MSpO2 ( r =0.48, P ＜0.05 ).No significant differences were found in terms of.sleep quality, MSpO2 , MMSE, and MQ between the two groups after treatment.However, results from digital symbol test and clock drawing test still exhibited significant differences between the two groups.Conclusion The combination of MMSE, Wechsler memory scale, clock drawing and digital symbol tests might assist the evaluation of cognitive function impairment in OSAHS patients.关键词
