Abstract

Tea green leafhopper, Empoasca vitis G the, is the most important pest in tea plantation communities in China, and various tea cultivars exhibit resistance or sensibility for the pest. Electrical penetration graphy (EPG) is a new technique that is used to detect the resistance of crops against leafhopper and other pierc ing-sucking pests. During the present work, the 6 elite cultivars, being extended in Zhejiang and Jiangsu Province,were acted as the examining material, and the feeding behaviours of the leafhopper were recorded by the video DC-EPG technique. The results showed as follows: (1)Seven types of primary EPG waveforms emerged on each tested cultivar. (2)There were more probing number and long-drawn E waveform when the stylets passively sucked in phloem on Xicha 5 and Sucha 1 cultivar;, on the contrary, there were less probing number and short E waveform on Longjing 43 cultivar.Moreover, Sucha 120, Zhongcha 108 and Anjibaicha were placed in the middle.(3)Recurring to cluster analysis and multiple range analysis, the resistance of 6 cultivars of tea plants against the leafhopper were judged, and the ranking order from strong to weak were: Longjing 43>Sucha 120> Zhong cha108>Anjibaicha>Sucha 1>Xicha 5, which was in correspondence with the sequence, from little to big, of the population density of the leafhopper on the six tea cultivars in the tea fields. It is considered that EPG technique can be used to judge the degree of the resistance or the sensibility of tea cultivars against the leafhopper.
